Growing sustainable development

Starting 1 April, Living Land, a television series addressing questions around land reform, is scheduled for broadcast on SABC2 on Saturdays at 10.30am. The 26-episode series offers handy, educational information to emerging farmers.

Explains Pontsho Makhetha, public education editor at SABC Education, "Living Land aims to assist in developing a sustainable agricultural industry by sharing valuable information with the public. The series, in magazine format, conveys information through case studies, debate and direct facts. Experts talk about the various aspects a farmer needs to operate as a business."

The content of Living Land is predominately rural based. Land reform and agriBEE issues and solutions will be addressed, and commercial and emerging successful black farming operations profiled, as well as farming models, production and market information and contacts required for sound business practices. Viewers will be able to contact Living Land with views and questions.

Presenters Thabo Bopape, Gcina Mkhize and Zane Gillion were chosen to represent different language groups. Producer Nozipho Ndiweni has an in-depth knowledge of educational television and an agricultural background, having worked as a consultant for the Department of Agriculture. Director Martie Willemse started out as an agricultural journalist and later worked in the advertising industry, dealing with several agri-business clients.
