The Pirates of Penzance offers a shipload of fun!

Escape into the merriment and frolic of The Pirates of Penzance, a vibrant-and-sassy production from The Waterfront Theatre Company that is now on at the Artscape Theatre for a short run until Saturday, 6 June.

There's only one thing this sunny staging demands of its audience: let go and surrender to the jubilant joy of Gilbert and Sullivan's delightful ageless comedy.

With its youthful cast injecting vigour into its pacey plot and mind-numbing libretto under stalwart direction of Paul Griffiths, with delightful choreography by William Jones and Shona Brabant, and great support from the musical direction of Jaco Griessel, you have no choice but to become a captive fan of the zany Pirates.

    A perfect winter warmer

It's a perfect winter warmer and much-needed entertainment for the whole family. At the opening night performance it was great to see young kids and adults scream with laughter and have a great time.

This is ultimately what theatre demands, for audiences of all ages to enjoy an evening of live theatre, fostering the communal spirit that feeds our culture and showcases the talent of future stars.

The leading roles are shared and at this performance Dirk Joubert was superb as the young Frederick, thwarted by a hard-of-hearing nursery maid and bound to a band of pirates, with great support from Megan Spencer as the Damsel who captures his heart - the lead roles are shared by Dean de Klerk and Jocelyn Roskilly on alternate evenings.

    Only one Pirate King

There's only one Pirate King and Ryan Arnold ruled with pizzazz, with Nathan Kruger stealing the show as the larger than life Major General, offering much delight.

Thembilihle Benenengu shines as Ruth, the beleaguered nursery maid, and alternates with Jules Stols.

The ensemble cast that performs the Pirates, Policemen and helpless maidens adds to the overall enjoyment of the production and turns the Gilbert and Sullivan classic inside out.

With sensible set design by Deon Bischoff and apt costumes by Delia Sainsbury, The Pirates Of Penzance proves that theatre is alive and well in Cape Town.

It's great to see The Waterfront Theatre School burst out of its seams and take bold steps forward in securing a future for the marvellous young talent we have in Cape Town.

Make sure to spend an evening with The Pirates of Penzance before it ends on Saturday. It's well worth it and a offers a great evening out for the whole family. It's crazy good wholesome fun that should not be missed.
