Career Quest offers students in depth look at work possibilities
The supplement, Career Quest, will be relaunched by Sunday Times on April 14 and will appear eight times during the year, within the newspaper, moving away from its previous stand-alone publication style.
The eight new comprehensive editions will focus on different career fields, providing high school pupils, parents and teachers with an in depth look at available career options as well as the subject choices and study plans required to pursue them.
"Few resources exist to help learners with their subject choice and it's important that they understand the long-term implications of them," comments Patti McDonald, publisher at Times Media Education. "The expansion of the supplement will allow for a deeper understanding of the different career options and the necessary skills and training involved."
Help the country fill the skills gap
For Grade 9 pupils across the country who are faced with the daunting task of making subject choices, the supplement has been an invaluable resource since its first publication in 2009.
"Learners need to be aware of all the options available to them as well as the steps they need to take to reach their goals. While many matriculants and graduates battle to find work, there are many skills that South Africa desperately needs. Learners, parents and teachers can use the supplement as a guide to help learners make themselves more employable and help the country fill the skills gap."
The series will begin with a general introduction to the world of work and then focus on specific careers sectors in the supplements that follow. These will include the personality traits suited to the specific careers; institutions where learners can study; and advice on where learners can apply for career-related bursaries. The supplements will also provide handy tips on goal setting, time management, effective studying and presentation skills, as well as advice on coping with stress - whether while studying or at work.
Career Quest supplements will be available on the following dates: 14 April, 12 May, 23 June, 14 July, 11 August, 8 September, 13 October and 10 November.
