Paper till rolls free of BPA at Pick n Pay
Bronwen Rohland, director of sustainability, said, "Although the use of BPA is only banned in South Africa in baby bottles, we seized the opportunity to stop using paper containing BPA for our till slips and our smart shopper vouchers last year. Our house brands, such as baby bottles, water bottles and other plastic containers, also are BPA free and we comply with legislation on baby bottles."
Rohland was reacting to calls by Dr Carl Albrecht, head of research at the Cancer Association of South Africa, who was reacting to a call by France for Europe-wide controls for paper products containing the chemical, including till slips.
"For us this is a decision about being a proactive retailer and a responsible corporate citizen. Although, we were not compelled by legislation to do so, we considered the concerns of some of our customers to move away from products containing BPA," concluded Rohland.
