Cape Town tolls "will be different"

The proposed N1-N2 Winelands toll project in Cape Town will be different from Gauteng's e-tolling system, the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) said last week.

Spokesman Vusi Mona said Gauteng would have an open-road tolling system with no booths on the roads, whereas Cape Town would have toll plazas with an option for motorists to pay manually.

In Cape Town, Sanral would appoint a concessionaire to build, operate and transfer basis to finance and maintain the toll road.

The City of Cape Town has taken legal steps to stop the project.

On 16 May, the Western Cape High Court will hear the city's application to stop Sanral from taking further steps to implement the proposed project.

Sanral says e-tolling on Gauteng roads is due to start within the next two months.
