Kirstenbosch Gardens' seasonal musical delight

Picture yourself in the perfect position to be relaxed and swept away on a lazy Sunday afternoon breeze, accompanied by just the right glass of your favorite vintage and a great brie cheese. Now cut the phone off, let the kids play, and wrap yourself up in the most beautiful blanket of some of South Africa's finest musical talent. Enjoy the pristine beauty of Cape Town, at a temperature known as... just right.
Kirstenbosch Gardens' seasonal musical delight

Such was the ambiance, Sunday afternoon, 22 February at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with their most inviting, Summer Concert Series. Every inch of grass on its hillside was covered by a sea of humanity. Nestled among the sultry beauty of the lush green foliage, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, accompanied by a seasoned choir and some seemingly angelic soloists, swept us away with their musical finesse.

A grand crescendo string and brass entrance opened our musical pallets for what was to be the most delightful musical experience, for this writer, to date. Not missing at all the hustle and bustle of the outside world below, we were held captive by the light string ensemble and the vocal arias that were lavished on us. Hearing the bells, strings and resounding timpani over that kind of landscape, is nothing short of breathtaking.

This Sunday's Concert Series, to aid David Davidson's Chelsey Flower Exhibit, was one of shear delight and surpassed all expectation. Included in that number were many a parent who gave thanks for the staff who watched over the kids while mommy and daddy snuggled up on the blankets to partake. The immense crowd gathered, immersed in the afternoon sun and did not seem to want to leave the awesome beauty of such surroundings. The lovely fragrance of the fynbos mingling with "that other bottle of Chenin Blanc" didn't help the matter a bit.

If you and your family are considering an afternoon out for some of Cape Towns finest music and want to do so without having to go through turnstiles herded like cattle... Kirstenbosch is your Eden of choice. Hurry though, after a spectacular event like this, the seating, wine and cheese can only last so long.
