Shakespeare's As You Like It @ Maynardville

As You Like It is a twisting tale of love and lust as character after character falls in love with someone they suddenly set their eyes on. Love at first sight seems like a modern day cliché, but in this Shakespearean pastoral comedy it is the order of the day. Director Geoffrey Hyland puts together a masterful piece capturing the audience and pulling them into the Forest of Arden with promises of “journeys, adventures, trials and transformations.”

All characters were portrayed excellently as the cast's performance was near flawless as they moved swiftly from one scene to the next creating an animated fluid story. Lead actress Lika Berning was impressive as she moves from the feminine Rosalind to the attempt at country boy, Ganymede. My favourite character however was Touchstone, the court clown played by Mark Elderkin who adds a little more comedy to the rest of the act as he sways around the stage trying to keep Audrey, the goatherd played by Claire Watling from revealing herself too much.

Another great part about the production was the costume design by Dicky Longhurst. The colours and themes were excellently executed ranging from beautiful court-wear to hippie couture in the Forest of Arden (real nice touch there).

It was all in all a really good night out and Maynardville is the perfect setting to watch a classic come to life. While not one of Shakespeare's most profound pieces it is still enjoyable nonetheless.
