'Thirsty for Action' raises awareness about water conservation

In honour of National Water Week (18-24 March 2013) and the UN's World Water Day (22 March), Woolworths and MySchool has launched a competition called 'Thirsty for Action', which is aimed at raising awareness about the need for every child to help protect South Africa's water resources.

The competition, which is open to all schools in South Africa, asks learners to write a letter to tell what they think about water and what they do to conserve it at home and/or at school. They should also say why their school should win one of the four fully installed 10,000 litre water tanks up for grabs. Woolworths, MySchool and the Woolworths Trust are sponsoring the tanks.

Based on literacy strategy

"South Africa is a water-stressed country. National Water Week and the UN's World Water Day provide the perfect opportunity to get young learners thinking about the importance of water to life on Earth, and the crises of water shortages and water pollution," says the head of Woolworths educational programmes, Pieter Twine. "Our reason for challenging learners to write letters is based on the Department of Education's literacy strategy."

The competition launched on 20 February 2013 and entries close on 28 March. The winners of the various provinces, across the country will be announced on World Environment Day on 5 June 2013.
