Law firm donates books to primary school
Over the past eight months, a number of its employees made donations towards the Vuka Booka book drive. The proceeds were used to purchase books for the learners at the school. The Travelling Bookshop set up shop at the firm, enabling staff to choose and purchase books to the value of their donation. In addition, a generous donation from Woodhill College was received towards the book drive. This money was used to buy additional early reading books for lower grade learners.
"The firm is proud of this initiative and is most excited that it is able to assist the learners improve their reading skills," says Nicky Garnett, partner and head of Adams & Adams CSI Group.
"As part of our desire to improve the lives of the children in this community, we also started a remedial programme this term. Many children who attend the school are from foster homes where several children may live together in an abusive and non-nurturing environment where they do not receive sufficient assistance with their schoolwork. The firm started in February this year, where volunteers of the firm act as mentors to eager learners on Saturday mornings. Teachers from the school, remunerated by us, guide us.
"We strongly believe our feeding, maintenance and learning initiatives at the school will improve the lives of the children in this community."
