[TEDxCapeTown] Ditch the car and try these alternative transport options
Uber is an on-demand service that seamlessly connects you with a private driver at the tap of a button. The entire service is cash free and the fare is deducted directly from your card on file. For questions, please contact Uber at moc.rebu@nwotepactroppus.
Are we really free to choose more cost effective environmentally savvy options to move?
Yes. What is required is some time to experiment, knowledge to make better choices and co-creators willing to share experiences in order for progress to happen. TEDxCape Town is the perfect opportunity to allow yourself to try something new when it comes to physically accessing the city.
Please note that parking near the City Hall building is very limited as the Grand Parade is no longer the domain of vehicles. This is an opportunity to leave your car behind and try one of these alternative options:
1. Join the Bicycle Bus
Arriving at City Hall at 8:30am. This group commute from the Southern Suburbs allows newbie riders and individuals to be guided by a more experienced 'bus driver' on a predetermined route that picks up riders along the way. Bus starts at Rondebosch Common parking lot at 7:45am. Safe bicycle parking available inside City Hall. For more info or an alternative departure point please email moc.liamg@snikliw.rik.
2. Bike share
Make your way to &Bikes bicycle lifestyle shop on the corner of Loop and Waterkant Streets. Rent your bike at a reduced rate and enjoy a delicious complimentary coffee before departing. This ride will be guided. On the return of your bicycle, &Bikes will offer cyclists a complimentary glass of wine.
Cost: R50 for bike, helmet, lock, coffee and wine. Email moc.liamg@snikliw.rik to reserve your bike.
3. MyCiti Bus
Visit www.myciti.org.za to find your nearest station and timetables. Consider cycling to the nearest station if necessary. Bicycles are welcome on busses at no extra charge. Connect for free from the Civic Centre stop to the 103 bus and hop off on Buitenkant street for a short walk to City Hall. Be sure to purchase your R30 Myciti Card before boarding and enjoy the city's world class bus system.
4. Metrorail
Catch a train into the city and enjoy a short walk to City Hall from the Central Station. After TEDxCapeTown festivities are over, consider using Uber to make your way home.
For timetables and stations visit www.getgometroapp.com or download the City's combined mobility app called TCT (android and iphone).
5. Carpooling
As a last resort, cars can be accommodated on Harrington Square on Caledon Street with a short walk to City Hall. Thanks to Woodheads for providing this service. Cars may park in this area free of charge provided that there are two or more occupants per vehicle. Find a TEDx friend and park for free. Limited parking in the area on side streets is also available. As with all modes of transport, please drive, park and walk carefully.

About TEDx, x=independently organised event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.*
