Six tricks to avoid the new year's sales slump
If you're struggling to get motivated to start the 2015 work year, try these six tips:
1. Take stock of what worked last year and what did not, particularly if you see your approaches to work and clients were exactly the same as the previous year or from month to month. Although habits keep one grounded and on top of things, these habits might be what is holding you back. Think of different ways to approach challenges this year; ways that will surprise current clients and inspire new accounts.
2. Start the year with a clear strategy in mind, and plan your monthly and annual sales targets in advance. This way, you won't be surprised at how many deals you need to meet your target. Display your targets somewhere all your employees have access to.
3. Offer incentives to clients who book before January 15 and aim for a particular number of bookings. Don't be too relentless, though - if a client says no, leave them be. Give those who do meet the deadline a discount on this deal or a future one. Consider offering package deals that include a discount. Remember to contact last year's biggest spenders and offer special deals to them.
4. Contact your past customers in the new year, reminding them that you are still in business, laying out what you will be offering this year, and asking them if they would like you to give them a call. Don't be too pushy - everyone is a little sensitive this time of year.
5. If you don't have a social strategy yet, begin planning one. Even if you prefer to rely on word of mouth for your company's success, at the very least create a Facebook page and Twitter account. You don't have to be very active on these accounts - a good post or tweet once a day will be enough at first. These platforms allow you to connect with potential clients and deal with complaints.
If you already have a social strategy, this is the year to step it up. Find someone who is both passionate about your business and your industry who will make it interesting for your clients.
6. Hold a party! A celebration so soon after the holiday period will be a welcome relief after returning to work. If you have the budget, invite all your past clients and tell them to bring their friends and family. Not only will you please your current clients, but they are likely to bring along people who may also be interested in your services in the future. Remember to have business cards and flyers handy so people know how to contact you.
