SABC responds to BCCSA ruling

The SABC, in a statement issued to the press this week, has welcomed the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa tribunal's ruling that, strictly speaking, the "City of Tshwane" as sometimes referred to on the broadcaster's news, does not exist and says that henceforth it will refer to "the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality".

"We also welcome the decision of the tribunal not to impose any penalties in this matter," continues the press statement. The tribunal explains its reasons for this finding as follows:

"With all the confusion raging over the exact name of the city that was once known as Pretoria, we do not find that the respondent intentionally contravened the code."

The SABC also welcomes the tribunal's rejection of three of the four complaints laid by the Freedom Front Plus in relation to this matter. For the full ruling, go to www.bccsa.co.za/templates/judgement_template_385.asp.
