Grey College wins 2015 High School Quiz
Any high school in the central Free State region is afforded an opportunity to participate free of charge and the three finalist schools (plus the standby school) receive FEIT study bursaries. For 2016, the bursaries totalled to R47,500.
Eight new schools from the central region participated for the first time this year. The schools went through various preliminary rounds until the final three. Trials were held at Bloemfontein, Welkom and Kimberley.
According to Carel Korff, Civil Engineering lecturer and organiser of the event, 2015 was a year of surprises and goal achievement. "The event made history when schools from previously disadvantaged communities entered the quiz for the first time in 2015, winding their way up to the top and became the first two schools from previously disadvantaged communities to qualify for the quiz finals. This is an amazing milestone. My wish for 2016 is to see more township schools enter the competition."
Although Moemedi learners mentioned that the competition was nerve wrecking, Motswela learners said that they are happy to be part of the competition and look forward to a better 2016. Grey College said that they were content with their performance this year.
Grey College earned two FEIT study bursaries worth R 10 000 each. Moemedi Secondary school in Bloemfontein won two R7 500 bursaries and Motswela Secondary school from Kroonstad won two R5 000 bursaries. Other schools that participated in the qualifying round were High School Sentraal High School Sand du Plessis, Ikaelelo Secondary (all located in Bloemfontein) and High School Goudveld (Welkom).
