These dynamic young women benefitted from the Girl Child Institute of Mentorship in their matric year and were mentored by highly successful and influential business women.

Adopt-a-School Foundation and Cell C have a shared vision of a future where more women will be vibrant contributors to the economy. Adopt-a-School Foundation works with schools in some of South Africa's most marginalised communities and the Girl Child Bursary Fund has given four young women from these communities the opportunity to become such contributors.

Our bursary recipients are:

  • Busisiwe Dube - Studying a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Dube matriculated from Moses Maren Technical Secondary School in Eikenhof, South of Johannesburg.
  • Martha Tsela - Studying a national diploma in Office Management and Technology at TUT.
  • Shelly Sikhosana- Studying National Diploma in Finance and Accounting and TUT. Tsela and Sikhosana matriculated from Zikhethele Secondary School in Devon on the Gauteng and Mpumalanga border.
  • Zingiswa Tyeya - Studying a Bachelors of Science in Human Life Biology at Stellenbosch. Tyeya matriculated from Thandokhulu High School in Mowbray, Cape Town.

The above three high schools have been adopted by the Industrial Development Corporation and are involved in a five year whole school development programme to improve school leadership, upgrade infrastructure and develop educators through Adopt-a-School Foundation.

Initiatives like the Girl Child Institute of Mentorship are critical to the holistic development of high school children.

The Girl Child Bursary Fund takes this initiative to the next step, offering deserving matriculants the opportunity to further their studies and build a prosperous future for themselves and their families.

"I love science and I know engineering can be a well-paid profession. I can't live my whole life in a squatter camp and I want to study something that I love and which will allow me to one day build a real home for my mother and my sisters," says Busisiwe Dube, one of the bursary recipients.

Adopt-a-School Foundation works with over 65 different corporate partners to improve the delivery of education in South Africa's rural and township schools. Through partnering with like-minded organisations and individuals for a greater cause, the Foundation is making a meaningful impact on the lives of our country's future leaders.

This year, a number of partners awarded bursaries to adopted school matriculants, including the Shanduka Foundation, Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust, Industrial Development Corporation, Grindrod and Lafarge Education Trust.
