HSFSA distributes 1000 beanies

During winter, the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA (HSFSA) made their annual nationwide appeal for wool donations to knit beanies for all the children listed on its Children's Programme. The programme is geared towards teaching heart healthy habits to crèche and primary school aged children as well as their caregivers.

Majority of the children are from very disadvantaged areas where woolen caps are considered as a luxury. The HSFSA committed itself to ensuring that these children would be kept warm during the cold season.

Over 1000 beanies were distributed over a period of three months and the work continues. 16 crèches from Mamre, Athlone, Elsies River, Ravensmead, Heideveld, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Nyanga have benefited thus far from these donations.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation SA have extended thanks to all members of the community who donated wool in support of the campaign, and to its main corporate wool sponsor, Shoprite Checkers as well as the over 20 community workers who knitted the beanies, and continue to knit in preparation for Winter 2010.
