China textile remains constant

Textile exports from China to South Africa remained constant over the past few years, Chinese Assistant Minister Zhai Jun said in Pretoria last week.

He said South Africa and China had a quota agreement on the export of textiles.

"Textile export to South Africa remain constant. A slight increase of 0.3% was registered last year," he told reporters.

Quotas on Chinese textile and clothing imports to South Africa came into effect in January 2007 in response to complaints about external competition. Jun and his South African counterpart Ebrahim Ebrahim had held a strategic dialogue forum in Pretoria.

The South Africa-China strategic dialogue forum is an annual consultation between the two countries to deepen bilateral and trade relations.

Ebrahim said a procurement mission from China planned to visit the country to increase trade relations.
