Tribeca awards South African short film

The 9th Tribeca Film Festival, held in NY from 21 April to 2 May 2010, has awarded the South African film 'Father Christmas Doesn't Come Here' as the Best Narrative Short film from among 47 finalists. The jurors were Justin Bartha, Katherine Dieckmann, Jack Dorsey, Peter Facinelli and Brooke Shields.

The winner received US $5,000 cash, 1524 metres of 35mm film stock donated by Kodak and the art award “A Box of Smile, 1967/89” by Yoko Ono.

Funded by the South African National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), the film was one of the Indigenous Language short film contest winners and is written by Bongi Ndaba and Sibongile Nkosana, produced by Jeremy Nathan and Michelle Wheatley of DV8 and directed by Bhekumuzi Sgweje Sibiya.

The film also won the Tri-Continental Film Festival late last year and is being included in the South African line-up taking place at Cannes this year.
