Online branding do's and don'ts

Facebook is a platform for people to connect, communicate and interact. But branding yourself online through social networks can be a task if not thought out properly.

It seems some people are having negative effects from using Facebook. This is purely because not everyone who uses Facebook is conscious of themselves as a brand.

If you are looking to brand yourself online or maintain your brand then here are some tips.

You should:

  • Connect with new people

Connecting with new people promotes you. Adding one new person a day could open doors you never knew existed. Connect with people in your industry but also outside of your industry.

  • Remain active, yet mysterious
  • Try set aside 10 minutes minimum a day to check your Facebook. Update your status and make one or two wall posts. This shows people you are still active and exposing them to you as well. Being too active though and letting everyone know your every move is not as exciting as you think. People will become bored of you.

  • Add your educational and work information

    You shouldn't:

    • Act out of character
  • Don't do something you wouldn't like your mother or next employer to see. It can damage your brand and your career.

  • Make private information available
  • Keep your home address, telephone number to yourself (especially youngsters). This just makes it easier for stalkers and predators to find you. It might also keep those prank calls and the junk mail to a minimum.

Facebook is now merging the offline world and the online world. Convergence is upon us.
