Update on SABC's licence amendment process
In May 2004, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) called on all interested parties and the public to comment on SABC's application for amendment to its licence. Eleven submissions were received from, amongst others: etv, Primedia, Media Monitoring Project and Freedom of Expression Institute.
On 19 July 2004, the SABC responded to all 11 submissions. Copies of the responses may be accessed from the Authority's website (Under What's New).
The next step in this licensing process will be public hearings. Suitable dates and schedules will be disseminated as soon as they are available. ICASA has encouraged the media and interested individuals to attend, as during the hearings an opportunity will be presented for questions and clarifications.
