Zimbabwe's 'passport' to nowhere
Zimbabwe has issued a new temporary travel document (TTD) but it's not being recognised by SA - and that means that cross-border traders who previously entered South Africa to buy goods for resale are now not able to do so.
At the root of the problem is the cost of Zimbabwean passports - US$170 (about R1300), which most people cannot afford - but that's only if you can get them... There is a massive backlog in issuing new passports after production essentially ceased when hyperinflation made making them too expensive.
