National Arts Council appoints new CEO, CFO

The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC), committed to developing and promoting excellence in the arts, has announced the appointment of its new CEO Monica Newton and CFO Thami Kubheka.

Before joining the National Arts Council, Newton was a chief director in the Office of the Premier of Gauteng, responsible for, amongst others, organisational performance monitoring and strategic planning in the organisation. Teaching is a fundamental part of her life, which came into being when she was invited to lecture a module on arts policy at the Wits School of Arts for a post graduate programme in Arts, Culture and Heritage Management. Over the years, this relationship has evolved into a part-time lecturing position in the Wits School of Arts, where she lectures on subjects ranging from arts policy to the operational skills necessary to run a successful arts organisation, and supervises the work of Masters students. This relationship with the University will continue with the agreement of both Wits and the NAC.

A well-rounded career based on real experience

Kubheka holds a National Diploma in Accounting, Certificate in Accountancy with the University of Natal and completed his articles with the international auditing firm KPMG. Since completing his articles, Kubheka has worked in all levels of finance in a range of organisations, working his way up from administrative to management positions in the finance world and in the process, creating a career that is both well-rounded and based on real experience.

Kubheka is a member of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) and he also serves as a board member for the Valued Citizens Initiative, a non-profit organisation that aims to create a values driven youth and an ethical community in schools, where he acts as the organisation's treasurer.

"We believe that their wealth of knowledge and expertise will play a critical role in ensuring efficiency in the implementation of the NAC mandate. Their understanding of the national imperatives will inform their leadership roles in the development of arts across the country and, ensuring that the arts takes its rightful place on the develop agenda," said Angie Makwetla, NAC chairperson.
