    This workshop is designed to tackle the thorny questions of copyright and the principles and procedures of obtaining permissions. The issues concerning 'fair dealing', usage (including internet material), types of publication, copyright owners and the different forms of permission required will all be investigated.

    Whether you are employed or working freelance in the publishing environment, information on copyright and permissions will assist you in offering an extra service to employers and clients, for example by giving advice to authors who wish to self-publish.

    The workshop will take place at the EES-Siyakha Conference Centre (click here for directions on Saturday, 28 March 2015, from 9am to 1pm (please register by 8.45).

    Speakers

    Denise Nicholson has a BA degree and Higher Diploma in Librarianship and Information Science from UNISA and a Master of Laws (Research) from Wits University. She advises and gives workshops to academics and students on copyright, plagiarism, citation and scholarly communication, including Open Access publishing. Well-recognised locally and abroad, she has played a positive role in promoting access to knowledge and copyright awareness and has many publications to her credit.

    She was Policy and Dissemination Advisor in the African Copyright and Access to Knowledge Project (ACA2K) of 2007-2010, which studied copyright laws and practices in eight African countries, including South Africa. Her free online newsletter Copyright & A2K Issues reaches more than 10,000 people around the world.

    Erika Wagner is Head of Publishing Services at Macmillan South Africa, where she began working in 2006 after completing her Honours in Publishing Studies at Wits University. Her areas of interest include training in the publishing industry, the importance of business process mapping and, most recently, the field of copyright and permissions, which is a fascinating and very often misunderstood part of the publishing process. Erika is intent on resolving the uncertainties concerning permissions by means of teamwork and clear thinking.

    Please note: Owing to the workshop format, attendance is unfortunately limited to 20 attendees, early registration is encouraged.
