Assegai Individual Award Winners 2002

This year's Assegai Individual Award Winners are Jodi Paul - Young Direct Marketer of the Year, Lyn Wilson - Achiever of the Year, Computer Facilities - Direct Marketing Supplier of the Year, Mike Wright - Direct Marketer of the Year, Dr Nigel Wigram - Hall Of Fame and Isabel Jones - Special award.

1. Young Direct Marketer of the Year: Jodi Paul, tde

This award is given to the nominee deemed to demonstrate the most promise as a direct marketer of the future. This year, Jodi Paul, an Account Director with the difference engine is the worthy winner.

This talented young woman displayed a rare talent for the competitive direct marketing industry early in her career, exhibiting the flexibility that every young direct marketer needs to survive and thrive in an increasingly demanding market place.

Having achieved the highest score in the DMA's Direct Marketing Course in 2002, Jodi consistently integrates direct principles into her marketing approach with great ease.

This is a lady who "walks the talk"- she thinks and lives direct and it shows- in the training and coaching she applies; in the value she delivers to colleagues; and in how she uses her direct marketing knowledge in creative problem solving.

As a result Jodi's clients and the difference engine constantly reap the benefits of sound Direct Marketing through excellent response rates and returns.

2. Achiever of the Year: Lyn Wilson, FCBi

This award can be won by any level or type of direct marketer and is given to the nominee who has demonstrated exceptional knowledge, craftsmanship and commitment in any direct marketing field or medium. This year's Direct Marketing Achiever is Lyn Wilson from FCBi.

Her instinctual knowledge of her customers and her market, her strong belief in the importance of measuring results, and her ability to deliver remarkable return on investment, make this woman a worthy recipient of this award.

One of her most outstanding achievements has been her consistent ability to apply direct, relational principles within the business environment to great success. Leading by example, her influence has enabled an environment where strategy, creative, production, operations and fulfilment all operate within a direct, focussed mindset. It is this single attribute that contributes to the growth and success that FCBi has enjoyed as specialist direct marketing communications company.

3. Direct Marketing Supplier of the Year: Computer Facilities

This award recognises the supplier, organisation or individual that has made a significant and measurable contribution to the direct marketing field through excellent service, quality of work and added value, in whatever form, during the awards year.

This year's recipient is indeed a worthy winner. Since its inception, Computer Facilities has played a significant role in servicing the direct marketing industry, and has benefited the corporate sector, advertising agencies, and their respective clients, mail houses, students and the direct marketing industry at large.

Computer Facilities is a stalwart of the direct marketing industry, and the DMA. A member of many years standing Computer facilities is a committed supporter and contributor to the Association and its activities.

4. Direct Marketer of the Year: Mike Wright, The Email Corporation

This award recognises the individual who has made the most significant and outstanding contribution to the direct marketing industry; this year it is Mike Wright's turn to be honoured.

As the Managing Director of The Email Corporation, Mike pioneered a business that builds personalised one-to-one communications systems, focussing on email and its accompanying operations, communications and marketing. He is a founding member and past chairman of the Audit Bureau of Internet Standards, (ABIS) which is recognised as setting the standards for web-traffic measurement and a committed contributor and supporter of the Direct Marketing Association.

5. Hall of Fame: Dr Nigel Wigram

The lifetime achievement award goes to the nominee recognised as having made a singular, unique and consistent contribution to the direct marketing industry during his or her career

The 2002 Lifetime achievement award goes Dr Nigel Wigram, a man, who has made a significant and consistent contribution to the Direct Marketing Industry over the past 20 years. It is his increasing passion for the Direct Marketing industry and commitment to the development of new talent that has helped to influence and shape the lives of many direct marketers over the years. Over the course of his career, Dr Wigram has served on the DMA Board and Postal Affairs Committee, and represented the industry on the National Postal Forum management committee as well as on the Ministerial Committee to formulate governmental Postal Policy -where he was instrumental in the drafting of the postal Green and White Papers. Nigel has been the keynote speaker at numerous DMA symposia and conferences and a regular lecturer at the Cape Town DMA Certificate Course. He regularly travels abroad as an internationally regarded expert and conference presenter in his area of specialist expertise.

Dr Wigram was a pioneer of direct marketing at Old Mutual, where he worked for almost 40 years. Those who worked with him know that he does not suffer fools gladly, nor does he accept less than the very best.

He is a worthy inductee into the DMA's hall of Fame, where he joins a select group of only 4 other recipients of this lifetime achievement award.

6. Special Award: Isabel Jones

In Direct Marketing - without customers - we are nothing. On the Eve of Women's Day, the Direct Marketing Association gives a special award to a redoubtable lady, who has tirelessly devoted her energies to being the champion of customers everywhere. Whilst participating in the industry as a television infomercial star, Isabel Jones has retained her independence as a consumer champion. She is recognised for her support of the Direct Marketing Association, her involvement in the industry and her unstinting contribution to consumer protection!
