Independently Cheeky

In 2005, at the age of 21, Tasmin Simón launched Cheeky magazine, an independent aspirational youth publication targeted at 14 - 21 year-old girls and young women. "Empowering the girls to believe that they are capable of reaching their dreams is our objective. With a realistic approach, enough hope and the right attitude - it's not about landing an incredible opportunity, it's about creating it!" says Simón, who is also editor.

Cheeky covers all the basics that the industry demands, the fashion, the beauty and the trivial entertainment. But Cheeky strives to give more than a shallow impression, challenging the readers to accomplish in all they know and strive in all they don't.

"Cheeky mag sets out to encourage our readers to self-actualise and prepare them to make informed choices. In a time where every decision made creates your day to day experiences and results in your future situation, we feel our readers have to be confident enough to stand firm in their values. They can't simply just read and move on - we're pushing them to read and reflect," says Simón.

The main concept of Cheeky is that of the CoverBabe competition. The mag runs a competition in every issue giving the ordinary girl an opportunity to feature on the cover and in the fashion and beauty shoots.

Hillgard Simón, who is involved marketing and advertising, explains, "It's not about the superficial. This family business strives to meet the needs of the target by pushing the readers' perceptions to an intellectual level. A 'Cheeky' reader is a girl with the 'right' attitude."

The magazine is available nationwide and retails at R13.95. The spring issue will be on shelves shortly.
