New year TAMS
SAARF TAMS uses the All Media and Products Survey (AMPS) to estimate the size of the television universe, which will set the parameters of the sample. The TAMS universe is adjusted every six months with each new AMPS release (normally in January and May each year). While people are continuously buying new TV equipment, the TAMS universe can only be updated every six months after AMPS is released.
Updating the universe regularly ensures that the data remains up-to-date with changes happening in the TV arena, changes which are brought about by the constant addition of new households to the TV-viewing population and the inexorable move to Pay TV.
This year, in addition to the usual universe update, the total population has been updated as per the BMR figures. The SAARF TAMS household universe has increased from 9,820 000 to 10, 651 000. From January 2011, it will also weight the DStv bouquets separately.
The following tables show the current TAMS universe (2009B), the universe that will be implemented (2010A) in January 2011 and the differences between them.
