Millions won't be recovered from MPs
Parliament has been accused of taking a "lenient" approach to huge amounts of money owed to it by parliamentarians according to an article published in Business Day.
The Centre for Social Accountability says that MPs should be forced to repay the money owed but warns that Parliament's purchasing of the debt gave the impression that it wants to expunge the debt.
Last money the centre obtained a court order compelling the legislature to hand over lists of the MPs involved in the fraudulent travel claims. Business Day says that the lists will be handed over to the centre today.
In a separate story, The New Age says that less than a third of the R17 million fraudulently claimed by MPs has been recovered. It says that 89 MPs had repaid about R5 million. According to the secretary to Parliament, Zingile Dingani, it would not be possible to recover the outstanding R12 million.
