Campese tackles rugby's 'boring preoccupation with defence'
Australian rugby legend David Campese was as candid as ever on his visit to Aberdeen.
He has launched an outspoken attack on the defensive obsession which he believes is turning off fans in his sport, STV.TV/Aberdeen reports. Speaking at a Nox Nightclub function, the 101-times-capped winger was typically frank in his views on the modern game.
"I was watching Australia play Argentina and I switched it off after 20 minutes, because it was all kicking, nobody was trying anything different, and it was just boring," Campese said, adding that the fault lies with the "preoccupation with defence, defence, defence." According to STV.TV/Aberdeen, Campese called to "remind teams that international rugby is supposed to be about entertaining those who pay their admission money." He pointed out that recent attendance figures were disappointing "because fans aren't stupid. They want quality, not quantity, but too often right now they are not getting it."
