SA bursaries - last call for applications

A bursary is a great option for any student requiring financial support for their education in the 2021/2022 period. Most South African bursaries are available to students who perform well in their studies and can provide sufficient proof of financial need.

The following is a list of bursaries open for students and whose closing dates are 15 or 31 August 2021. These bursaries are only available to citizens of South Africa who meet the specified eligibility criteria.

1. Fedisa Future Vision Bursary: The Future Excellence Design Institute of South Africa is funding undergraduate degrees offered at any Fedisa campus to the tune of R50,000. This bursary is awarded to students who win in a fashion competition that is organised by Fedisa annually.

To apply, you need to fill in the application form, attach copies of the required documents with a well-packaged "Future Vision" and attach receipts, costs breakdown, rationale, and motivation letter. 2. Hortgro Bursary: The Hortgro Bursary offers support in training great minds and creating an excellent labour force. These bursaries are available to students in various study fields including Biochemistry, Agricultural Economics, Genetics, Plant Pathology, and Horticulture. Students pursuing Entomology and Nematology, Soil/water science, Microbiology, and Research and technical are also eligible.

3. Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund Bursary: This is a fidelity guarantee kind of a fund that is geared towards safeguarding people from loss through trust fund theft. Anyone who has suffered a loss due to property or monetary theft brought about by the actions of an attorney can be reimbursed through this fund.

The fund offers bursaries to qualifying postgraduate and undergraduate students annually. Through this bursary, postgraduate students can improve their professional qualifications as practitioners. The value of this bursary is R8,000 per year and is awarded for a maximum period of two years. For undergraduate students, this bursary will cover the last two years of the LLB programme. 4. Liberty Actuarial Bursary: The Liberty programme is inviting students pursuing actuarial science to apply for an award so long as they have gone beyond the second year of study. This bursary will cover accommodation, tuition fees, travel allowance (if any), and meals. Qualifying students will receive networking opportunities and other support during their studies. 5. National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Bursary: NFVF is inviting disadvantaged students to a bursary award to enable them to pursue studies within the film and television industry. These bursaries exclude the courses in acting and performance. NFVF bursary is available at the national and international levels.

For the national bursary, students will have their tuition fees fully covered in year one after which the funding will reduce to 80%. The international bursary covers expenses up to RS280,000 and includes living expenses and tuition fees. 6. Masakh’iSizwe (MIS) Bursary: The tertiary study institutions, professional structures, public works, and the Western Cape Government Department of Transport and NGOs have collaborated to come up with this bursary programme. The bursary is open to students pursuing building science and engineering courses.

The Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme includes support services for students and secures employment opportunities for successful graduates. It also gives priority to disadvantaged learners with excellent learning opportunities. The bursary applicants must attend Stellenbosch University, the University of Cape Town, or the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. 7. Rhodes Trust Scholarships for Southern Africa: The Rhodes Scholarship is an old South African scholarship and is open to students between 19 years and 25 years. It supports students pursuing various courses at Oxford University.

The grant covers expenses related to study with a stipend provision of up to three years for students at the postgraduate level. Special accommodation will apply to MBChB and MBBCh students. The applicants should have leadership acumen and be academic performers. 8. Gallagher Foundation Scholarship: The Gallagher Foundation invites scholarship applicants for full undergraduate students in South Africa. The applicants must demonstrate leadership abilities with good academic performance.

The major of choice for qualifying students include business, architecture, engineering, education, math, philosophy, language, law, science, psychology, history, and political science. 9. GWK Ben Scholtz Bursary Fund: GWK invites students to apply for bursary funds in areas within various skills sectors. The qualification fields include programmers, buyers, agriculturalists, agricultural economics, safex traders, and grain producers.

10. Hatch Bursaries: Hatch invites qualified students under engineering programmes to apply for the bursary. The bursary covers full education costs and other additions depending on the specific needs of the students.

Hatch bursary applies to students pursuing courses in engineering fields such as civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering. Hatch bursaries cover tuition, travel allowance or accommodation, vacation work, and allowances.

11. UCT Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded every year to qualified UCT undergraduate students. The applicants must demonstrate leadership abilities and prove that they are in financial need.

UCT Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership programme applies to undergraduate students enrolled in any UCT faculty. 12. Nedbank External Bursary: Nedbank Group, a large bank in South Africa awards bursaries to qualified and disadvantaged students. Nedbank bursary scheme accepts learners who are interested in improving the welfare of their communities and those with the potential to learn.

The grant will cater to the students' expenses at recognized institutions in South Africa in the performing arts and medicine fields. 13. Saica Thuthuka Bursary Fund: Saica is looking for academically excellent students aspiring to become Chartered Accountants. The Saica Thuthuka Bursary fund targets students with a strong mathematical background, although those who perform well in other subjects can still apply.

The accredited institutions collaborating with this fund include the University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch University, among others. 14. South African Actuaries Development Programme (SAADP) Bursary 2022: SAADP encourages skilled actuaries in South Africa by offering financial support to needy students. The programme is funded by Deloitte, First Rand Foundation, Sasria SOC Limited, INSETA, Bankseta, among others.

SAADP bursary programme is designed for academic performers who are studying Actuarial Science. It includes tuition fees, residence, meals, textbook costs, and living expenses and is renewable annually. 15. South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) Bursary: SAIRR is a South African research and policy organisation providing funding to needy students in the country. Students are invited to apply for SAIRR bursary for the 2022 academic period.

The bursary will be awarded to students pursuing courses in any field for a diploma or undergraduate qualifications. Currently, honors and postgraduate funding are not available. 16. South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa) Bursary: Sopoa is committed to responsibly and actively protect and promote the interests of its members in the property industry. It searches for talented people who can contribute to value addition in the industry by offering support through bursaries.

17. South African Road Federation Bursary (Sarf): Sarf is dedicated to improving the road industry in South Africa and promoting economic growth through education. Sarf invites students in the road transport sector for bursary applications for the 2022 academic year.

The value of this partial bursary will be determined by the learners' needs and the decision of the Council of Federation. 18. UFS Stars of Stars Competition Bursary: The University of Free State provides bursaries to students wishing to pursue higher education in the area of Matric. The bursary applies to any study field although preference is given to good performers who are involved in community development and have leadership skills.
