Pet care industry ready for WODAC
According to Euromonitor International's "Pet Care in South Africa" report (Sep 2012), this sector saw both value growth and volume growth in 2011.
"This echoes our experience of the market for the period reviewed and through the present day," says Brian Blades, director of WODAC. "Consumer purchases continue to be driven by a desire for quality product and pet owners in the upper LSM groups continue to purchase the premium brands, as the report indicates."
Referring to the dog ownership stats, he added, "I can't help but wonder if South Africa wouldn't rank higher if you took into account not only dogs, but also cats, birds, fish, horses, reptiles, rodents and exotic pets."
Last month the World of Dogs & Cats and Pet Expo Durban expo hosted 18 150 visitors a record number for that region.
He says it is more than just ROI that entices so many exhibitors to participate. "Our ethical approach to pets, pet ownership and our expo are key reasons that exhibitors are so keen to align their brands with WODAC. Responsible pet ownership is the only kind that we endorse. Pets are entirely in their owner's care and in a loving, responsible household will thrive and become a beloved member of the family - giving back to their owners tenfold the love and companionship they receive."
Varied programme
Like the pets on display, exhibitors come in all forms, from multinational companies to small niche providers of specialised pet services and products.
This year's expo will include such fan-favourites as the halls of dogs, cats, birds, fish, exotic pets and reptiles; the National Cat Show and exciting, expanded equine attractions with an entire hall and indoor arena and comprehensive programme devoted to The Magic of Horses.
The programme includes such events as the Dogs of the World Parade; Dog Agility; Canine Survivor; Flyball; Dog Carting Display; 60-Weaving Pole Challenge; the Dancing with Dogs SA Champs; and the WODAC Dog Show.
"Just as the pet care industry continues to grow and advance, so too does the show. We keep our fingers on the pulse of pet care trends and continually challenge ourselves to find innovative ways to incorporate these into the show, so that we remain the premier, trusted expo for local pet owners and the industry that serves them," concludes Blades.
