The New Age and that adspend conundrum

The New Age (153,000 readers, according to AMPS) enjoyed R10,199,988 of government spending in 2013-2014, says PoliticsWeb. Sowetan (with 1,674,000 readers - more than 10 times more than The New Age) got R10,434,476 - about R240,000 more to play with. Daily Sun, on the other hand (with 5,351,000 readers - about 35 times more readers than The New Age) - got R7,888,753. That's just over R2,300,000 less. And then there is the question of the adspend on newspapers with comparable readership figures to The New Age, which enjoy a far smaller adspend. That's why questions have been asked regarding the amount of adspend the government is channelling to the Gupta-owned paper.

Sticking to the surreal, a young woman was murdered and her former boyfriend was found guilty of the crime. Now, years later, a new investigation has been opened - as a podcast... Serial - A murder investigation...

Locally, King James II says 'yes' to a Durban sea of 'no' for the 2015 Loerie Awards campaign and yes... Durban, you have been warned...

Into Africa... Leigh Andrews also looks at how BBC.com's doing African digital news justice.
