Gallagher Convention Centre responds to complaints

Following the guest complaints about the Faithless concert on Saturday, 5 February 2011, at the Gallagher Convention Centre (GCC), CEO Adolf Venter has issued a statement apologising for any inconvenience experienced by guests but points out the organisers increased the audience numbers by 3000 the day before the event.

"Some events host in excess of 50 000 visitors over a number of consecutive days. We exercise flexibility in the total value chain of any event hosted here and our staff are well equipped and experienced to manage many types of events.

"The organiser utilised the services of their own preferred security supplier who were responsible for managing access control, as well as security in the venue. As a result of the increase in numbers, the on site security contracted for the event struggled to cope, as in our opinion not enough turnstiles were provided at the main entrance. Gallagher requested that another gate be opened to allow for a more free flow of guests.

Technical delays

Venter says that the technical delays in the concert venue had a 'roll on' effect in terms of delays thereafter. The first group of guests that had been directed to the bar and catering area had rather a long delay until the commencement of the show. This became a further issue when the second group of guests were then also allowed entrance into this venue, which led to the bars in the venue being overwhelmed and slowing the rate of service. "However, I am not one to make excuses and will take ownership of the fact that there were undoubtedly serious delays in the bar service for the event and for this we apologise.

"Last year we invested millions in the upgrade of our venue, including the upgrading of our cooling system. However, the venue was instructed to refrain from turning on the cooling system during the performance as this would interfere with the production of the show. As a consequence of this instruction, discomfort was unfortunately created for the guests."
