“Lance Armstrong is undoubtedly one of the greatest sportsman of our time, revered the world over for his success both on and off his bike,” explains Ravi Naidoo, 94.7 Highveld Stereo station manager. “As organisers of the second largest, mass participation, timed cycling event in the world, the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge, we're delighted to be able to host Lance in South Africa, and just one week before the 11th Cycle Challenge takes place.”
Armstrong will also be the headline artist at the annual gala ‘'Nite of the Stars'' banquet at the Coca-Cola dome on 8 November.
Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France in 1999, before going on to win the race another six times, making a total of seven consecutive wins. This historical world-first made him one of the most recognisable and admired sports people of this era.
If scripted by Hollywood, the story would be dismissed as trite melodrama: a deadly disease strikes a promising athlete. Despite desperately thin odds, he manages not only to beat the affliction, but also to return to the sport and win its top prize. Unbelievable, except that it's true.
However, the story doesn't end on the finish line of the Tour de France. His experience made him a part of the international cancer community, and motivated him to unleash the same passion and determination he exudes in cycle races in the fight against cancer.
