Uber riding roughshod over legal requirements

Taxi company Uber was yesterday taken to task by parliament for insisting on operating "without restrictions" and for failing to ensure that all its taxis are registered as metered taxis.

Cape Town traffic police impounded almost 100 Uber vehicles in June because its drivers did not have public transport operating permits. They were later issued with 145 operating permits.

IFP MP Khethamabala Sithole said: "Uber wants to operate all over without restrictions. We are going to have problems, there are bus operators, taxi operators to be considered."

DA MP Manny de Freitas said: "Some Ubers are not registered as metered taxis, which is national legislation. How is it that some of your drivers are not registered?"

Uber general manager for Southern Africa Alon Lits said the company had created 2,000 jobs so far and this could soon increase to 15,000.
