Alide Dasnois first Cape Times woman editor

Alide Dasnois has become the first woman to fill the editor's chair on the Cape Times, Chris Whitfield, editor-in-chief of Independent Newspapers Cape, announced yesterday, Tuesday, 31 March 2009.

Dasnois is described as an outstanding journalist who has previously served as editor of Business Report, acting editor of the Pretoria News and deputy editor of the Cape Times. “She is well-respected throughout the business world and among her peers and she will bring her vast experience and integrity to this critical position on this title,” stated Whitfield.

In terms of the new editorial executive structure, Independent Newspapers Cape has appointed executive editors not only to the Cape Times but to the Cape Argus and Weekend Argus, as well as also created a position of managing editor across these titles and the Daily Voice.

The following people take up their new positions today, Wednesday 1 April:

    • Dasnois becomes executive editor of the Cape Times.

    • Gasant Abarder, formerly deputy editor of Daily Voice, becomes executive editor of the Cape Argus.

    • Janet Heard, who has most recently served as an assistant editor on the Argus and as its news editor, becomes executive editor of the Weekend Argus.

    • Martine Barker becomes managing editor of Independent Newspapers Cape. As such she will work closely with the editor-in-chief, helping evolve strategies and ensuring the smooth flowing of the day-to-day operations. Commented Whitfield, “This new job is designed to integrate operations that have been handled in a piecemeal manner in the past and I am confident Martine's years of experience, editorial skills and work ethic will make this position a success.”

The appointment of Lindiz van Zilla as sports editor of the Cape Argus was also confirmed.
