Monitoring the airwaves

Afstereo Electronic Media Services has launched AirCheck, an on-line radio and television monitoring and data service, in South Africa. The service currently tracks commercials and songs on more than 2 000 radio stations around the world, allowing advertisers to see when their recorded commercials were flighted, to listen to them as they were broadcast and monitors competitive activity 24 hours a day.

Afstereo's Philip Botha says: "We have been testing AirCheck on P4 Cape Town and Good Hope FM since the middle of February and recently started tracking Highveld Stereo, Jacaranda FM, 5fm and Metro FM."

Afstereo is the licensed Southern African distributor of AirCheck through i-Bridge Media which holds the exclusive African rights to the technology. AirCheck is owned by RCS Inc of New York.

Agencies and advertisers can now see exactly how their campaigns have been flighted. This includes the date and time of each broadcast. They can listen to the commercial as it was broadcast, including the spots or music that was played around it.

They can draw comparative reports on competitive activity across any date range and listen to competitive commercials.

Stations are also able to prove that they have delivered exactly what was booked and see the advertisers and song playlists on competitive stations.

Subscribers can access all of these reports 24 hours a day via the internet.

"The proven wave-pattern recognition technology means that one does not have to pre-fingerprint or watermark or have access to pre-recorded broadcast-material in order to complete AirCheck analysis tasks and prepare reports. As a result, the response to AirCheck from agencies and advertisers has been extremely encouraging. The system has already proved its worth on a number of occasions," says Botha.
