LED office lighting project awarded

The Portside Development is a new 32 story mixed use commercial development in the City of Cape Town, South Africa and reportedly the tallest new building to be built in South Africa for in a while. This building will soon feature energy-efficient LED lighting by Cree Inc. Designed and supplied by the South African Cree Distributor, Light Kinetics for Old Mutual offices.

Over 2,000 Cree CR22 architectural LED troffers will be installed in-place of traditional T5 fluorescent recessed light fixtures, delivering over 50% reduction in annual energy costs including the reduction of air-conditioning energy costs due to lower heat generated by the Cree LED fixtures.

The 2,000 Cree CR22 recessed linear luminaires replace the original design of 2,000 T5 fluorescent fixtures on a 1:1 basis throughout 10 floors of the Portside Building, providing the owners, Old Mutual with energy efficient office space. Designed to last 15+ years whilst eliminating planned maintenance or tube replacement over this period, the Cree CR22 linear luminaires not only reduce energy consumption and lower energy costs, but the new fixtures also significantly improve the quality of light and reduce glare over T5 fluorescents as well as reducing planned maintenance and energy costs for Old Mutual's tenants in the Portside Development.

"The CR series is truly a no-compromise alternative when upgrading from fluorescent lighting," said Russ Gittleson, CEO of Light Kinetics. "Delivering higher-quality light, longer life, lower glare and greater energy savings than any comparable fluorescent options, the Cree CR series troffers are a natural fit for office
settings like the Portside Building."

Backed by a Cree original ten year warranty on the CR22 LED fixtures, the risk of investing in this new technology is fully mitigated.

The Portside development, a 32 story structure, has progressive architectural design features. The architects sought to design a flexible, energy-efficient building that would accommodate energy conscious businesses by integrating of new lighting and energy technologies in the new structure. All Cree LED fixtures are controlled and managed by a DALI lighting control system allowing for an additional 30-50% in energy savings.

Gittleson continued, "Thoroughly modern as it is being built, the Cree LED lighting choice will allow the Portside Building's facility managers to realise sizeable life cycle economic benefits, while continuing the mission set forth by the building's designers and developers."
