Workshops and lectures at jazz festival
For the past eight years, espAfrika has been running a number of Training and Development programmes, workshops and lectures, absolutely free to the public. These include: School Music Workshops, Masterclasses, Gigs For Kids, an Arts Journalism Course as well as Music Business Lectures.
Music Business Lecture
This year's Music Business Lecture, “2010 - Shake and Wake time for the Music Industry” (presented by Copyright Specialist Graeme Gilfillan from Nisa Global Entertainment), addresses the “heart of the music industry matter” and addresses some of the survival strategies, as well as some insight as to where the music industry opportunities still reside, and what it takes to stake a claim.
Unlimited supply of digital music
This year heralds another dramatic year for the music industry, specifically, and entertainment in general. The real impacts of the unlimited supply of digital music and the ever-decreasing price is forcing many to consider if the music industry is really the place to have a life, let alone make a lot of money. Whether you are a creator, a performer, an owner, a manager, an administrator or a user, the landscape is experiencing a paradigm shift in how, where and when money is made. With music retailers against the wall, and music no longer offering any retailer a sustainable product future, the way forward presents a bewildering and scary wilderness.
Not all doom and gloom
Well, nothing could be truer if one said that in the music industry, things are not always as they seem. It's never been a place for the faint-hearted, regardless of how glitzy, sexy, famous and glamorous it all seems. You can be sure, though, that it's not all doom and gloom - there are, without question, opportunities, although admittedly not many.
The lecture will take place on Saturday, 3 April, at the New Space Theatre from 12.15pm to 1.45pm.
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival takes place on Saturday, 3 April and Sunday, 4 April. Go to www.capetownjazzfest.com for all the details.
