Alexandra Township gears up for centenary

Alex 100, a project initiated and coordinated by the Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GALXCOC) to mark the 100th birthday of Alexandra Township, is intended to celebrate the history of the township, its residents' achievements and the variety of activities aimed at improving the lives of residents. The project will begin in February 2012.

The projects and events include tourism development initiatives, environmental care, health awareness, an arts and music festival and a business expo and investment seminar.

Gathering support

The Alexandra Renewal Programme (ARP), Greater Alexandra Development Forum and Alexandra Land and Property Owners Association (ALPOA) are among the public organisations that have seen the potential of the celebration to draw attention to the developments that have taken place since the ARP was initiated in 2001 as a presidential project.

The Department of Economic Development within the City of Johannesburg has given its backing to the project, as has the Directorate of Arts, Culture and Heritage within the City's Department of Community Development.

Other organisations that have confirmed their support of the celebrations include Alex FM radio, which broadcasts to 30 000 listeners every day; local newspaper Alex Pioneer and Ma Afrika Tikkun, the NGO that raised funds for the recently opened Recreation Centre in Alex.

GALXCOC and Adele Lucas Promotions (ALP), the project managers, are presently engaging with local city councillors who will be involved in communicating the message to residents in their respective wards.
