Drug manufacturers have pledged to have warning labels on all over-the-counter cough and cold products before next year's flu season after Health Canada made this country the first on Earth to recommend that the products not be used on children under six.
Paediatricians applauded the federal move, which will put warning labels on all over-the-counter cough and cold products by fall 2009, saying there is evidence they can cause harm to young children and there is no indication they do any good for children in that age range.
