Twankey Bar to host Beer Appreciation Evening
Combining the popular notion of a wine and food pairing, and the fact that beer and Indian cuisine are perfect time honoured partners, Taj Cape Town is holding their first Craft Beer Appreciation Evening on Thursday, 26 June at 18h30.
Hosted in the Twankey Bar on the historical city corner of Adderley and Wale Street, the Beer Appreciation Evening sees 16 of the best Craft Beers available paired with a selection of authentic Indian delicacies from Taj Cape Town's fine dining restaurant, the Bombay Brasserie.
As with any food and beverage pairing, most of the fun is found in trial and error experimenting with new combinations. But it is useful to know some general guidelines because very often the exception to the rule is the most fascinating.
Jean Muller, host of the Beer Appreciation Evening at the Twankey Bar offers the following three tips when pairing beer and food.
- If you familiar with wine tasting, think of a lager as white wine and an ale as red wine when it comes to pairing with food. In place of an acidic wine, a hoppy beer can be used.
- Try balance a sweeter beer with sweet food and a tart beer with tart flavours. However many exceptions to this rule like a robust beer with sweet creamy flavours are worth a try.
- Beers that carry strong hop bitterness can overwhelm delicate food, and fair better when paired with hearty or spicy meals with robust flavours.
There is limited space and bookings for the Beer Appreciation Evening are essential. Tickets cost R395 per person, and one lucky guest will win a six course dinner for two at the Bombay Brasserie -widely renowned as Cape Town's finest Indian restaurant.
