First ABC quarterlies released
The latest ABC figures, First Quarter 2006, clearly show that print media is "alive and kicking", according to Charles Beiles, general manager of the ABC. For the first time under the revised and updated rules, certified quarterly data is available in an effort to make the information more current, competitive and comparable with that of other media.
When circulation information for the first quarter in 2006 is compared with that of the same period in 2005, the following key trends emerge, says Beiles:
- Whilst daily newspapers have grown by 3.7% those of weekend newspapers have declined by the same percentage.
- Healthy growth in circulation was seen for custom magazines (+7.3%), community newspapers (+8.0%) and consumer magazines (+5.75%)
- Within specific categories of consumer magazines, those performing exceptionally well were those focused on 'youth', circulation up 31.3%;'wellness' showing an increase of 25.5%; 'home' up by 25.1% and 'woman's interests' showing an increase of 15.8% - the latter sector with four new titles.
- Business to business magazines showed an overall significant increase in circulation of almost 25%, with those aimed at computing (+107.9%), property (+26.6%), mining (+18.6%) and business (10.6%) areas showing the most growth.
- A particularly vibrant growth area is that of free newspapers - with 28 new titles there are now 118 free newspapers in existence. Growth in circulation was almost 32%.
