Newspaper

Comments McLennan, “The categories are noticeably thinner now that agencies can only enter their work into one category, but there was a clear winner with King James Johannesburg's Cape Union Mart Store Card campaign, where ‘you have 55 days to pay, or maybe never at all'. Very funny. DDB's Holiday Tours and Saatchi's Lamisil also used visual humour to tie for second place.

Magazine

“Draftfcb's Toyota Yaris's ‘Big Sound' Gorilla won this month, closely followed by Lowe Bull Cape Town's campaign for Russian Bear Vodka. Two very different art direction styles. An age-old debate reared its head over third-placing Osram ad by Saatchi's. There was an identical execution that placed second in ad of the month last month, for Maglite. Some judges called for the ad to be removed, based on first in wins but after discussion we decided to let them fight it out at ad of the year, as they were obviously done without knowledge of the other.”

Outdoor

Continues McLennan, “Is it a plane? is it a bird? No, it's a interactive poster/digital/experiential/cellphone entry. Whatever it is, the Saatchi's Operation Smile was well-liked. Close behind was Ireland-Davenport's Sweets from Heaven campaign. The most discussion was around Draftfcb's SABC Radio posters. Some judges saying it was the stand out work of the month, other not getting it at all. Cannes will tell.”

Radio

“The clear winner was BBDO Cape Town's Brand Africa campaign, where they took vintage South African ad's and turned them into Brand Africa ads.”

Television

“It was fantastic to be spoilt for choice for a change. Four very different flavoured winners. Two other campaigns that couldn't be squashed into the top three, but the dude's though were very deserving, were the 5fm and Chicken Licken campaigns,” he concludes.
