Finding Nemo hits number one

Finding Nemo, which opened at cinemas on 28 November, now holds the title of the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film in South Africa – a record previously held by Ice Age (2002).

Over a 140 000 fishy fans helped the Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios release to the number one box office position.

Finding Nemo also holds the title of biggest ever opening weekend (live action and animation) for a Buena Vista International film in South Africa, putting it ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) and Pearl Harbour (2001).

Nemo and friends have also doubled the weekend box office takings of previous Pixar Animation Studios top performer, Toy Story 2 (2000).

The current top 5 opening weekend animated titles are as follows:

- Finding Nemo (2003)
- Ice Age (2000)
- Toy Story 2 (2000)
- Prince of Egypt (1999)
- Shrek (2001)

Finding Nemo follows the comedic and eventful journey of two fish, the overly cautious Marlin and his curious son Nemo, who become separated in the Great Barrier Reef. Written and directed by Oscar® nominee Andrew Stanton, who co-directed the 1998 Disney/Pixar hit, A Bug's Life and is credited as co-screenwriter on all four of Pixar's previous features, Finding Nemo sets a new "high water mark" for the art and technology of computer animation with its incredible underwater world populated with memorable characters. The film stars the voice talents of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould, Barry Humphries, Eric Bana, Geoffrey Rush, and Willem Dafoe.
