Ukhozi FM changes identity

One of South Africa's biggest radio stations, Ukhozi FM, will be revealing its new identity following a recent makeover session. This weekend, the eagle of the airwaves, known as a traditional Zulu radio station, has planned events where it will be sporting its new look and feel.

At the core of the festivities will be a nostalgic embrace of the years gone by, ahead of the unveiling of the station's new brand.

Listeners will be taken on a trip down memory lane reflecting those days when the station was still called Radio Bantu in 1949, then Radio Zulu later on and finallyup to the point when it was renamed Ukhozi (“eagle”) in 1997.

“Ukhozi is Africa's largest and most favourite radio station. From the time of its inception, the station has never stopped growing. It has continued to soar and to fly over its competitors amid the evolutions and dynamism that the broadcasting industry has experienced,” says Mlamli Nxele, marketing manager for Ukhozi FM.

“Icons of yesteryears”

“Our listeners will get the pleasure of hearing voices of some of our icons of yesteryears featured on our programmes. The voices to be expected include that of Rev Hawu Mbatha, Malindi kaNtuli, Winnie Mahlangu, VVO, Mandla Malakoane, Fikile Komotolo, Archie Bhengu and many more,” says Nxele.

On Friday, 30 May 2008, the station will unveil its new logo and look to invited guests only at International Convention Centre Durban. Entertainment at the red carpet event will include performances by artists such as the Soul Brothers, Chicco, Vusi Ximba, Sxaxambiji, Senyaka, Trompies, Zola, Thandiswa Mazwai, Profesor and Tizozo.

Then, on Saturday night, invited guests will be treated to a night of glitz, glamour, music and comedy. The event will be held at Madula's Place in Pietermaritzburg and guests will be asked to donate R500 to help raise funds for disadvantaged schools in the Midlands.

All roads will lead to the Pietermaritzburg Royal Grounds on Sunday for a concert where artists such as Ntando, Mafikizolo, Malaika HHP, PRO, L'vovo, Jub Jub, and many more will be performing. Entrance is R40.
