Businesses “switched on”

Parts of Johannesburg were in darkness last night as businesses and residents switched off the lights in support of ‘Power to the People' – an energy saving campaign initiated by Talk Radio 702 presenter, Jenny Crwys-Williams. “The switch off proved that it is easy for massive companies to make a significant difference in conserving energy and in turn, give power to the people. They switched off but I think they were very switched on!” she enthused.

Aimed at businesses in Gauteng, the campaign was launched in a bid to help conserve energy and protect the environment by urging companies to switch off unnecessary lights and other electrical equipment when no-one is occupying the buildings.

On Thursday, 23 August 2007, at 9pm, a number of businesses and residents joined in a symbolic ‘switch off' for an hour to show just how easy it is to preserve energy.

“I'm so delighted that the lights went out in Joburg last night and bowled over by the incredible support the campaign received,” said Crwys-Williams. “It was very exciting to see how open and enthusiastic gigantic companies were to come to the party.

Companies who showed their support included Primedia Broadcasting, Sandton Medi-Clinic, FirstRand, Absa, Cinemark, Investec, Mail & Guardian, Rand Merchant Bank, Discovery, Netcare 911, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the National Energy Efficiency Agency (NEEA) and Eskom.
