A call to enter the Jet Club Community Awards

Last year the Jet Club hosted it's first ever Community Awards. The awards aimed to recognize people in the community who had made a significant contribution to society. Due to the success of the event, organisers are once again calling for entries from people who are making a difference in their communities.

The awards are divided into four different categories and one winner for each category will be chosen. These categories are: We Care, We will overcome, Making a difference and Education.

The "We Care" category will recognize those who focus on helping vulnerable children, the elderly, Hospice or anyone involved in the health sector. "We will overcome" focuses on helping to prevent substance abuse, gang violence and abuse of women and children, while the category named "Making a difference" will recognize those making a contribution the field of entrepreneurship, youth development and adult centres. The final category - "Education" - will award educators who have made a difference in their chosen field.

If you feel you are someone who has made a considerable difference to the community you live in, or if you know someone who, in your opinion has done so, then make sure you fill out an entry form and get it to the organizers before the closing date on 31 July 2004. Prizes worth more than R120 000 are up for grabs.

Category winners will each receive R30 000 in cash for their project, R1000 in vouchers which can be spent at Jet, Sales House or Cuthberts stores, a financial management training course from Intec and media exposure to create awareness for their project.

Those who are nominated will be judged according to various criteria, namely relevance, impact, leadership, drive and vision. The winners will have to demonstrate that their work has improved the lives of a particular community as well as had a positive impact on the community where the project was run. Leadership potential will be examined and winners will have displayed potential for future leadership development. The winners will also have had to display drive to expand the project if given more resources and have a broader vision of developing their community or their country at large.

Entries are available in the Jet Club Magazine, in Jet stores as well as from social welfare offices countrywide. One can also contact Nikiwe Skele on 021 424 3517 and request an entry form from her. The competition is open to residents of South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho. Winners will be announced later in the year.
