Amandla! Screened for Workers’ Day

In case it slipped your mind, there is yet another public holiday on Saturday: Workers Day, and in celebration, "Amandla! A Revolution In Four-Part Harmony", will be broadcast on Workers' Day, May 1 on SABC 2 at 23h00. The television broadcast of the film is part of SABC 2's celebration of 10 years of democracy in South Africa.

Amandla! A Revolution In Four-Part Harmony was released theatrically and on video by Videovision Entertainment last year. The film is directed by Lee Hirsch and produced by Sherry Simpson and Desiree Markgraaf. It tells the story of home-grown freedom music and reveals the central role that music played in the long battle against Apartheid. It is the first film to specifically consider the music that sustained and galvanized South Africans for more than 40 years. Amandla!'s focus is the struggle's spiritual dimension, as articulated and embodied in song and music. It is unlike any other film on the subject of Apartheid, but rather an electrically expressive portrait of South African life then and now.

The film features a host of South Africa's foremost musical talent including Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim, Vusi Mahlasela and Sibongile Khumalo.

Sanjeev Singh, Head of Acquisition and Distribution for Videovision Entertainment commented, "We are delighted that SABC 2 will be screening Amandla! on Workers' Day. The labour movement was an integral force behind the struggle for freedom and a number of the songs featured in Amandla! were ones that workers composed during strikes and protests. The SABC 2 screening is certainly a fitting tribute to the role played by workers in South Africa's achievement of freedom and democracy. "

Amandla! A Revolution In Four-Part Harmony is currently available on video and DVD from Nu Metro Home Entertainment and is available for purchase at all major outlets.
