He is also a member of the National Planning Commission, which drew up the national development plan, which after Mangaung has taken the centre stage of national policymaking. He is credited for much of the input on South Africa's energy future. He has been outspoken about the need to accelerate South Africa's search for alternative power sources, including gas as a cleaner option than coal in the production of electricity.

His address comes as Nersa, the energy regulator, is holding public hearings on Eskom's bid to raise electricity prices by 16% a year.

The cost is R145 for members and R195 for guests. Bona fide working journalists can pay 50% of asking price, thanks to sponsorship from CEF. Other sponsors include BP SA, Distell, DBSA, Bass Gordon and BATSA. For more, contact Gloria on +27(0) 21 683 3990 or email az.oc.bewm@ffodaeh.
