Rashid Toefy new Convenco CEO
Since 2007, the position has been temporarily filled by one Convenco board member Denis Skeate.
Convenco's chairperson Andrew Boraine stated that he was delighted with the appointment of Toefy. “Convenco again needs a full time CEO to work with the board of directors on the proposed extension of the convention centre at the site of the present Customs House.”
Build closer links
Convenco is also looking to build closer links between the CTICC and local communities and to deepen the multiplier effect on the regional economy. “We also need to put plans in place for a new management contract once the existing one with the Amsterdam Rai Group from the Netherlands comes to an end in 2010,” said Boraine.
“We believe that we have found a candidate who has both international work experience and good local contacts. His international background in tourism results in a good understanding of the enormous strategic importance of the CTICC for Cape Town and the Western Cape.”
Toefy is presently MD of SASTS, a section 21 company operating nationally which initiates and runs educational work programmes between South Africa and more than 20 other countries around the world. Since 2000, when Toefy was appointed in this position, thousands of South African students have benefited from the services of SASTS, making international traineeships and secondments possible.
Before joining SASTS Toefy was employed as product development manager and international marketing manager with an international organisation involved in youth travel, IAS, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
UCT graduate
Toefy is a graduate of the University of Cape Town, where he attained degrees in Environmental Science and Economics. He also holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Business of UCT.
Coinciding with his appointment as the new CEO, Convenco will establish its offices in the new Convention Tower, presently under construction on the east side of the CTICC at the lower Heerengracht.
