Estrogen levels in women linked to migraine, seizures

The latest data published by the Institute of Psychiatric Research in New York has linked fluctuating estrogen levels in women to both migraines and seizures. According to the findings, “At times of life when estrogen levels change dramatically, such as puberty, post partum, or menopause, there are also dramatic changes in the nervous system.”

The research concludes that “Neurological disorders (e.g. seizures and migraine) often increase in frequency in women when estrogen levels change during the normal ovarian cycle.”

According to Dr Elliot Shevel, South Africa's migraine surgery pioneer, factors derived from the both the brain and the system of arteries and veins are shown in this new research to link migraine pain to fluctuating hormone levels.
“Estrogen works directly on the structures of the brain. The study has been able to show precisely the link between these changing estrogen levels and the central nervous system.”

The study published in the latest edition of “HEADACHE” the official scientific mouthpiece of the American Headache Society states that “there is potential to use this framework to develop new therapeutic strategies for patients.”
